Project in Journalism

My groupmates Malou, Reina, Nikka and I interviewed someone who wanted to be anonymous and this is how our interview went:

> For you, what are the ingredients to become successful in life?

I truly think that hard work and persistence are the keys to success. A great college and a good work ethic helped me to become a successful entrepreneur.

> How do you determine or evaluate success? Give an example of one of your successful accomplishments.

Success is measured as achieving your dreams at a certain time. In my case, success is in the form of achieving the goals I have set up for myself in the time frame I have planned it to be. In other words I am where I am meant to be and I am on the right track. I have a dream of a certain number of stores that i franchise in the next 5 years. I evaluate success in the number of people whom I employ that are the breadwinners of their own family. I evaluate success by having a healthy business that continues to generate a very good income for me and my family. I consider it an accomplishment to be able to provide jobs for hundred of people that work in my franchise business. My success allows me to send my children to good schools and give my family a comfortable life.

> Have you ever thought about giving up because of a mistake? What made you persevere and try again?

No, I have never thought of giving up because of a mistake because I feel that I have something to prove to myself. Prayer is what gives me strength to overcome obstacles that come in my way. Also, I believe that with God’s help, I can do everything because I know He will never forsake me. I also believe in myself that I will be able to correct any mistakes that I have made as long as I acknowledge that i made the mistake then I can move on and try to take steps to correct it. Not all my decisions regarding my business are correct, it is a learning experience always. Sometimes mistakes come from bad business decisions made in haste or without much thought to possible consequences of the action taken. I have always say to myself that whatever mistakes I make, there are lessons to be learned from it. I will never give up because of a mistake otherwise my family will go hungry. When I make a mistake I take steps to correct it before it becomes a serious problem that will threaten my business’s well- being.

> What tips can you share to the young people of this generation in order to become successful in life?

Set a goal and find ways to achieve it by listing down the things you need to do and the sacrifices that you have to make in order to reach it. Study hard. For example, I wanted to be a entrepreneur. I set out to get above average grades in high school so I can get into a good college in Manila. I studied for my entrance exams in college during the summer of my third year in high school to guarantee that I will be able to enroll in the top private school in Manila. I had to sacrifice not being together with my family for the next four years while i studied in college.

I resolved to use my leisure time wisely and to put off having a relationship until after I graduated from college. That way my studies came first always, even above leisure activities. I also had to use my time wisely during vacations spent in Iloilo with my family spending quality time with them to show my love and affection. I set a goal to finish my studies in four years by deciding once and for all what course I will take so that i did not waste my time and my parent’s money shifting courses because I did not like my first choice. After graduation, I started applying for jobs to get some experience in running a business, just learning the ropes and getting a feel for the work place. After five years of working for other people and another five years of working for myself , I decided to put up my own business with a little capital from my family, I decided to study for my master’s degree in entrepreneurship. I decided that this course could help me expand my business and run my company better.
